Read a fictional pension statement, distinguish recorded rights from forecasts and prepare the evidence needed to clarify missing periods.

A German pension letter can contain several monthly amounts. They describe different things. One concerns the record already held by the pension authority; another assumes future contributions; a further figure may illustrate future pension adjustments. None should be read as a guaranteed amount arriving in your bank account.

Start by identifying the document, then read each number alongside its label and assumptions. After that, check the insurance history behind it. The aim is to understand your records and the next question to resolve, rather than decide on a pension product from one letter.

For the wider planning process, read Retirement planning in Germany: a guide for internationals.

Which document have you received?

Renteninformation is the regular overview of recorded pension rights and forecasts. Rentenauskunft is a more detailed statement, including the stored pension periods and further information about calculation and entitlement. Both are based on current law and the account record, subject to legal changes and the record's correctness and completeness. SGB VI §109.

Versicherungsverlauf is the chronological history of periods and data held in your statutory pension account. It is the document to compare with your own employment and life timeline when checking for missing entries. You can request a current version from DRV. DRV's insurance-history FAQ.

Keep these documents together, noting their dates. Do not assume an older history contains updates reflected in a newer letter. If your document is a Rentenbescheid, a decision about a pension, its instructions and any deadlines need separate attention; this guide does not cover challenging a decision.

A fictional reading example

The following is an Alpenrose educational example, not a DRV document or a pension calculation. All amounts are invented. They are monthly gross illustration amounts, not entitlements or predictions for a reader. The rows do not reproduce an official letter's layout or order.

Imagine a reader with a stated regular pension start about 25 years away. Their illustrative information has these entries:

Example entry: A. Regular old-age pension based on the existing account record, without further contributions

Fictional amount: €300 a month

Reading question: Is the record complete, and which assumptions and legal conditions apply?

Example entry: B. Projected regular old-age pension assuming further contributions on the stated basis, without future pension adjustments

Fictional amount: €900 a month

Reading question: What future contribution pattern is assumed?

Example entry: C. Possible pension for full reduced earning capacity

Fictional amount: €800 a month

Reading question: What separate eligibility conditions would need to be met?

A and B concern old-age pension planning. C concerns a different benefit. The figures are independent fictional entries: they are not calculated from one another and cannot be used to infer a pension-points total.

The useful reading habit is to write the label beside the number. Recording only “my pension: €900” loses the assumptions that make the figure meaningful.

A. The figure based on the existing record

This is a view of old-age pension rights based on the recorded position and current rules. It is not an instruction that the amount can be withdrawn now, or proof that every condition for eventual payment has been checked.

Before using it in your planning notes, compare the account history with your own timeline. A number based on an incomplete record may need review even if the arithmetic in the letter is correct.

B. The projection with further contributions

DRV's current explanatory brochure describes a projection using contributions based on the average of the last five calendar years up to the regular pension start. Separate adjustment illustrations use assumed annual pension increases. They are scenarios, not guaranteed future rates. Check the wording in your own letter. DRV: Die Renteninformation – mehr wissen.

A change of earnings, a period without contributions or a move into a different insurance arrangement may make the assumed pattern unsuitable for your own planning. Record the change as a question for the authority; do not replace the official calculation with an unsupported personal estimate.

C. The reduced-earning-capacity figure

Rente wegen voller Erwerbsminderung is a separate statutory benefit. Its conditions concern capacity in the general labour market and insurance requirements, with exceptions. An amount printed in a letter does not establish eligibility merely because you cannot continue your present job. SGB VI §43.

Keep that figure separate from the old-age amounts. It is not additional retirement income to add to A or B, and this article does not assess a health-related claim.

Two checks before comparing a forecast with your budget

Gross is not the amount available to spend

DRV states that the amounts in the Renteninformation are gross. Health and long-term-care contributions and, where applicable, taxes affect the amount available. Its projections also do not account for lost purchasing power. The applicable deductions depend on your circumstances. DRV: pension correspondence explained.

Keep the gross label in your notes. There is no fixed deduction percentage in this guide. Tax residence, other income and the relevant insurance arrangements need their own assessment before a net estimate is useful.

Our guide to German payslips and your first tax return provides current employment context; it is not a calculation of retirement tax.

Future euros and today's spending are different bases

A purely mathematical illustration shows why the date matters. If prices rose by an assumed 2% each year for 25 years, €900 received then would have purchasing power of about €549 in today's euros: €900 ÷ 1.02²⁵.

The 2% rate, 25-year period and €900 amount are chosen for illustration. This is not an inflation forecast, investment return, net pension estimate or recommended planning assumption. A different rate or period produces a different result.

When comparing income and spending, use a consistent basis and label it. Do not subtract today's rent directly from an unlabeled future gross pension and call the difference your confirmed pension gap.

What pension points tell you

Entgeltpunkte are pension points used in statutory pension calculation. They are not a euro balance you can withdraw. DRV explains that earnings-related points reflect the relationship between insured earnings and the applicable average earnings; other relevant periods can also affect the record. DRV's explanation of pension points.

For this first reading, identify where the points appear and whether the document explains them. Do not infer that the sum of employee and employer contributions shown in the letter is an accessible personal savings pot, or calculate a refund from that sum. Any refund question needs a separate eligibility assessment.

Check your insurance history against your own timeline

Make a timeline covering employment, education, childcare, illness, unemployment and periods abroad where relevant. Compare dates with the Versicherungsverlauf. DRV notes that some periods require evidence and are not automatically recorded. Not every unlisted period will qualify for credit. DRV's insurance-history FAQ.

Use a short table to keep questions precise:

Period to check: A period of German employment

What your history shows: Dates, reported earnings, or no entry

Your evidence or question: Relevant annual social-insurance notification; dates to confirm

Period to check: Education or childcare period

What your history shows: Entry, different dates, or no entry

Your evidence or question: Start/end dates and documents; ask whether and how the period is relevant

Period to check: Employment or insurance abroad

What your history shows: Recorded reference or unclear treatment

Your evidence or question: Country, dates, foreign insurance number and available statement

For example, if your own records show an employment start in May but the history begins in July, record both dates and gather the relevant evidence. That identifies a discrepancy for assessment; it does not establish in advance how the account should be corrected.

If an entry is already present, check whether the dates and description correspond to your records. Avoid assuming that every visible gap is an error or that every entry increases the pension in the same way.

Gather evidence for account clarification

Kontenklärung is the process of checking and clarifying the pension account. DRV describes routes through its online services or the V0100 application. Use the official process and confirm what is required for your case. DRV's July 2026 account-clarification guidance.

A practical preparation folder can contain:

  • Your latest pension correspondence and current insurance history.
  • Your insurance number and a dated list of the entries you want checked.
  • Available social-insurance notifications, employment records and relevant payslips.
  • Education certificates and evidence of study dates where relevant.
  • Relevant childcare documents and records of illness or unemployment, if those periods need clarification.
  • Foreign insurance numbers, country-specific statements and dates of work or insurance abroad.
  • Previous account-clarification correspondence or decisions.

This is a preparation list, not a statement that every document is required or every period qualifies. Ask DRV which evidence it needs and whether any translation or further confirmation is necessary. Keep a copy of what you submit and the response.

If you have only recently arrived

Not having an annual Renteninformation is not proof that no pension rights exist. DRV describes automatic dispatch for insured people aged at least 27 with five years of contribution periods. If you have not received one, ask about your account and available records rather than guessing from the absence of a letter. DRV: pension correspondence.

Keep overseas arrangements as separate inventory entries. This German document should not be assumed to describe all pensions you may hold elsewhere. Cross-border eligibility, calculation and payment need their own review; this guide does not decide how a particular country's periods are coordinated.

Finish with three concrete questions

After reading your documents, write down which figure you are using and its assumptions, which period needs clarification, and which institution can confirm the next point. Those questions give you a useful starting point without turning an uncertain forecast into a product decision.
